Lewang, founded by architect Thomas Lewang in Munich in 2000, develops and implements commercial spaces all over Europe. The studio redesigned a building in Magonza constructed in the ‘60s to house a Douglas perfumery.
The project, which involved renewal of the building's outer façades and a completely new design for the interior, stands out for its attention to detail and thoughtful use of space. The sinuous lines of the fixtures, emphasised by careful study of light and use of contrasting colours, give the boutique a cosy, contemporary feel and are reflected in the ceiling and floor.
Lewang choose to pave the entire surface, measuring more than 400 square metres, with Atmosphere tiles by Eiffelgres, in the 90x60 cm size, laid in a composition which helps define and emphasise the layout of the spaces. The hues of Ash and Space combine to create an elegant play of contrasts distinguishing transitional zones from the areas where customers stop, joined by curved lines created using the water jet cutting technique to follow the lines of the furnishings.
The big windows overlooking central Gutenbergplatz let plenty of natural light into the shop and enhance the textures of the Atmosphere collection, with its tone on tone hues with glossy darker zones stand out against a lighter, matt background.
